“Edmonds mixed media artist, Kate Steiger, gives her impression of the past and present with symbols, artifacts and ornaments of ancient cultures. She blends the contours of the amphorae from Crete and Turkey with carved Egyptian panels, Assyrian friezes, Byzantine icons and Asian scrolls, creating a beautiful amalgamation of memory and imagination.”- Marian Liu, The Seattle Times, June 4, 2009
Katherine Steiger developed her original technique of mixed media painting while a student at the Rhode Island School of Design. After graduating with a degree in Fine Arts, Steiger worked in New York City for a few years, before moving to the Washington area. She had her first one-person show at the Spectrum Gallery in Georgetown. The exhibit was reviewed in the Washington Post:
“With all due homage to Matisse, Kate Steiger’s ‘Bulldog with Pillows’ demonstrates an exuberant imagination and evident mastery of technique.”- Meryle Secrest, The Washington Post
In November 2003, two paintings by Steiger were selected for the juried benefit exhibit, “Art for Art’s Sake” at the National Museum of Women in the Arts. She has had over twenty one-woman shows in the Washington DC area. In his discussion of her latest exhibit, Mark Longaker of The Georgetowner Newspaper described Steiger's work as a “rich tapestry, with textures varying from moderate impasto to collaged areas of Baroque design.” In the Winter 2010 issue of Luxe Interiors + Design, Katherine Steiger’s painting, “Poppies,” is featured:
“Painter Katherine Steiger attaches emotion to the inherent color and beauty of nature that surrounds her. Her works celebrate a joie de vivre that she experiences and hopes to evoke in her observers. ”- Luxe Interiors + Design
Steiger’s work is included in many corporate and private collections, she has done painting demonstrations, and been a guest lecturer at colleges. She is represented by galleries and art consultants throughout the United States and has participated in the Department of State’s Art in the Embassy Program. Artist's Statement
After living and working in Washington DC and its suburbs for most of my career, I relocated to the Seattle area. Since my move to the West Coast, I find my work growing looser and larger in scale. I am finding a new inspiration in Asian art and ornament. My studio in Edmonds gives me the opportunity to work on larger canvases, and the ever changing light and landscape, both sea and sky, encourage a more abstract and atmospheric quality to my painting.
